Jan Leland, LMSW, ACSW
Jan Leland, LMSW, ACSW, received her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Michigan State University and has worked as an adult mental health therapist and couples therapist, in an out-patient setting, for 30 years. Ms. Leland works with adults 18 and older. Her training and experience for the last decade have focused on short-term CBT, ACT, and trauma therapy with a variety of life issues, especially depression, anxiety and grief and loss, including neonatal loss. Ms. Leland’s work with couples is based on the work of Dr. Sue Johnson and Dr. John Gottman.
Ms. Leland also has extensive experience working with individuals experiencing acute and chronic health conditions, high-stress family or work situations, and major life transitions such as remarriage, step-parenting, job changes, adjustment to college, pregnancy and adjustment to parenthood.
The behavioral components of Ms. Leland’s work include teaching skills. These include mindfulness principles and healthy life-style changes, assertiveness, healthy communication, conflict resolution skills, problem-solving and decision analysis. Ms. Leland also works with clients to help them create appropriate expectations and boundaries for themselves and others.
To help clients make cognitive changes, Ms. Leland focuses on gratitude, non-emergency thinking, identifying distorted beliefs, and changing thought patterns through the use of repetition and practice.
Ms. Leland has a range of additional experience including: Clinical Director for an Ann Arbor based, multi-site mental health and substance abuse out-patient treatment program; Instructor for the MSU School of Social Work and Lansing Community College; Contributing author for a psychiatric textbook, and president of a non-profit organization created to expand and enhance services for sexual assault survivors in mid-Michigan. Ms. Leland has also served on a board of directors for a community-based crisis center.
